Activity 3: Modernism

Le Corbusier

Description of why their work is considered to be an example of Modernism.

Le Cobasier’s architecture only does not have any sort of decoration and were designed purely for function. His villas have a smooth and simple quality. This is why their work should be considered an example of Modernism art.

Description of the work and its context.

The villas used an open floor plan with concrete slabs supported by reinforced concrete at the building’s edges and stairs. His architecture has been built all over the world; Switzerland, the United States, Iraq, India etc. Much of it however is in France.

Description of the artist’s intentions for and meanings of the work.

Cobasiers wrote his own book on architecture “The 5 Points of New Architecture.” He used these points to guide the design of his houses “a machine for living in.” One of which was the Dom-ino house built in 1915. He believed these houses would be affordable after the war time.

Description of how the work reflects the period in which it was made.

His work is simple and without any ornament like other modernist art of the early 20th centaury.
